ALLENDE, Mexico - Witnessed Fall

The Allende meteorite shower occurred at 01:05 hours on 8 February 1969, over a strewnfield of some 150 square kilometers, in Chihuahua, Mexico. Allende is classified as a Carbonaceous chondrite of the Vigarano group (CV3) and has a very low petrologic number of 3.2. Thousands of pieces fell and the shower provided more carbonaceous chondrite material for study than from all previous falls of carbonaceous chondrite combined. Allende has outstanding chondrules and Calcium-Aluminum inclusions (CAIs) are found in many examples. The specimens offered here came from the E. A. King collection and were retrieved within days after the fall. All of these examples are pristine, not the more commonly weathered material retrieved in subsequent years of scouring the strewnfield.
